1. Map the way people work
List desk locations, meeting rooms, printers, phones and shared equipment. Separate fixed connections from devices that will depend on Wi-Fi. Include likely changes to the office layout.
2. Plan coverage and cable routes together
Walls, room shapes and installation routes affect the design. Agree on access point positions, rack locations and available pathways before finalizing quantities.
3. Account for power and equipment
Some phones, cameras and access points use Power over Ethernet. Check switch capacity, required power budgets and backup power needs against the selected devices.
4. Define access and separation
Discuss staff and guest access, remote connectivity and the applications that need protection. Document who will administer routers, switches and wireless equipment.
5. Agree on testing and handover
Ask what will be tested and documented. A clear handover can include cable labels, equipment details, network diagrams and agreed administrative access.
